Applications of nitrogen (N) based fertilizers will be essential to sustainably increase global food production by around 70% in the next two decades to ensure Food and Nutrition Security for a growing planet.

However they will have to be applied in a much more efficient way than in the past to reduce Green House Gas (GHG) emissions and N-losses into the environment in order to meet the principles of Climate Smart Agriculture (see: ‘More for less!’ section on for additional information on this topic).

New advanced fertilizer types that control or stabilise the release of N to match crop needs during the growing season present opportunities to achieve Climate Smart Agriculture and these are reviewed in a newly published report from Informa’s Agribusiness Intelligence unit, Fertecon.

The report provides a highly-detailed and in-depth review of the chemistry, development and worldwide potential of slow and controlled release, and other speciality fertilisers including those with added N-stabilizers, for the future.

Policy decisions in China, which is the world’s largest producer and consumer of N-fertilizers, are the main drivers of global growth of slow and controlled release fertilisers, reflecting the strategic pursuit of increasing N use efficiency and reducing GHG and other emissions towards Climate Smart Agriculture.
